Hamburg Weather

Located in northern Germany, close to both the Baltic and North Seas, Hamburg has a temperate maritime climate. Temperate climates normally experience mild differences between the seasons, and this is the case with Hamburg. The German term for Hamburg’s climate is “reizkclima,” meaning “healthy, bracing climate.”

Temperatures in Hamburg are fairly stable throughout the year. Heavily affected by the activities of the Baltic and North Seas, many of Hamburg’s days year round are wet and windy. The humidity is generally stable each month, with slightly more precipitation during the summer months.

Warm, wet summers are the norm, with short rain showers expected during most days. Hamburg’s summer temperatures rarely exceed 68⁰ F, but temperatures up to 77⁰ F have been recorded. Even though more rain is expected during the summer months, this is a popular time of year for tourists to visit Hamburg due to the pleasant temperatures. Rainfall is quite reliable throughout the year in Hamburg and is expected during all four seasons, along with the winds generated over the Baltic and North Seas.

Winters in Hamburg can be quite cold. Some winters bring temperatures low enough to freeze the rivers and lakes in the area. Snow does fall in Hamburg, but it is more likely that the precipitation will be icy rain or sleet. The snowfall in this area is usually not heavy.

The winter months bring cloudy days to Hamburg. Beginning in October, there is more cloud cover, and the amount of cloudiness increases during the months of November, December, January and February. These months can be quite dreary. March sees a marked increase in the amount of daily sunshine. Spring is the favorite time of year for many Hamburg residents because there is more sunshine to enjoy, temperatures are warming up, and the city’s many trees are sprouting their green leaves and blossoms.
