Hamburg Climate

Located in northern Germany, with the North Sea to the northwest and the Baltic Sea to the northeast, Hamburg has a fairly wet and windy climate. Hamburg does not experience a great variation in weather patterns and has less of a contrast between seasons than other parts of Germany.

Winters in Hamburg are generally overcast and dreary. January is the coldest month for this city with an average low temperature of 28° F and an average high temperature of 36° F. The winds from both the North and Baltic Seas can be quite fierce, resulting in substantial wind chill factors. The Elbe River, which runs through Hamburg, and the city’s lakes may freeze during the winter months. The snowfall in Hamburg is usually light, and the city is more likely to have sleet as winter precipitation.

Springtime in Hamburg is a pleasant time of year. There is more sunshine because of the decreased cloud cover. Spring is generally drier than the preceding winter months. In March, the temperatures at the beginning of the month and the end of the month can vary greatly, from an average of 50° F at the first of March to 68° F during the last days of March. Hamburg is known as “The Green City on the Water,” and the origin of this name is quite evident in the spring. Trees and flowers in the many city parks and other natural areas come into bloom beginning in March.

Summers in Hamburg are typically warm and damp. There are many rain showers during the summer months, but they do not last long and it rarely rains for an entire day. June, July, and August have the most rain of the year, with approximately three inches falling in each of the months. July is the hottest month of the year, with an average daily low temperature of 54° F and an average daily high temperature of 70° F. Temperatures do not usually reach more than 77° F during the summer months.

As during the spring months, fall in Hamburg has less rain than the previous season. In general, September, October and November are mild and sunny. There is quite a difference in the daily average temperatures between the months of September and November. September has an average low temperature of 48° F, and a low temperature of 36° F is normal for November. A typical September has an average daily high temperature of 64° F, while the average high temperature in November is 45° F.
