Hamburg Airports Hamburg Airport is located five miles northwest of the center of Hamburg. Opened in January, 1911, Hamburg Airport is an international airport and the oldest German airport still in operation. Currently, renovations to the airport are underway, with new terminals being constructed along with connections to Hamburg’s S-Bahn, the part of Hamburg’s rapid transit system that provides service to suburban areas of Hamburg. An estimated ninety-two thousand people travel from Hamburg Airport every week. The airport has expanded over the years to meet the growing customer needs and presently covers more than two square miles. Handicapped travellers and children traveling on their own are well-accommodated. The airport offers an array of cafes, restaurants, shops and banks. Travelers can exchange currency at the airport and also have access to ATM’s and wireless internet service. There are several options for transportation from the airport. Travelers can ride an Airport Express bus to Hamburg’s Hauptbahnof. The Hauptbaunof is Hamburg’s Central Station. This is a central junction for all the lines of the U-Bahn subway system, the S-Bahn rapid transit system, and the mainline train system. Nearly any location in or near Hamburg can be reached from the Hauptbahnof. TravelPorter Airport Service can be used by travelers requiring local door-to-door service. Hamburg buses are available to those with destinations in the central city or suburbs of Hamburg. These buses are equipped for handicapped patrons. There is always an abundance of taxis that can transport travelers to any destination. The Flughafen Lubeck Blankensee, or Lubeck Blankensee Airport is located approximately thirty-seven miles to the east of Hamburg. Flights to Lubeck Airport are not technically flights to Hamburg, but they are advertised as such by many airlines and travel agencies. Travelers will find substantially lower airfares for flights to Lubeck Airport compared to flights to Hamburg Airport. Most flights to and from Lubeck Airport are with Ryanair and WizzAir, with Ryanair having the majority of the flights. Jet2Com is expected to begin servicing Lubeck Airport in 2008. There are no flights to destinations in Germany from Lubeck Airport, and there are also no German airlines that service this airport. Ryanair provides fights to and from London, Stockholm, and Dubin, and flights to Eastern Europe are provided by WizzAir. Another much smaller airport servicing Hamburg is the Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport, which is located in the southwestern area of Hamburg. Airbus, the producer of fifty percent of the world’s passenger aircrafts, is located near this airport. Many of Airbus’ 30,000 employees utilize Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport for both business and private flights. |
